Information for First-Time Boarders
First-time boarders should plan on arriving at Winding Road Kennel 30 to 45 minutes early on check-in day so that our staff can get to know your pet and gather necessary information about any special needs they may have. Shot records may be faxed directly to us from your veterinarian at (304) 428-3545. Alternatively, you may bring the records with you when you arrive to check in and drop off your pet.
If you are nervous about boarding for the first time, our staff recommends a trial experience for your pet as a day guest at our daycare program. Through this, your pet will become accustomed to the way we operate before your extended leave, and they will feel relaxed and comfortable during their stay.
Frequently Asked Questions
at Winding Road Kennel
What should I bring along with my pet to board at Winding Road Kennel?
We require only current, validated vaccination records for each of our guests. No temperament testing or other pre-screening is required, as each guest is afforded his/her own private run. Group play is not offered at our kennel. We want to make your pet’s stay with us as stress-free as possible. Therefore, our focus is on one-on-one playtime – and our guests really seem to prefer all of the personalized attention that they receive here with our fun and energetic crew. Your pet will be the king of his own domain while visiting Winding Road Kennel!
Aside from the vaccination requirement that is in place for the safety of all of our guests, Winding Road provides everything necessary for the care and comfort of your pet for the duration of his stay. However, you may bring the following items if you feel that they would make your friend more comfortable:
– Bedding (Recommended if your pet has experienced homesickness.)
– Food or Special Diet
– Toys
What are the vaccination requirements?
Although we recommend a comprehensive course of vaccinations to most effectively protect your pet, the mandatory canine vaccination list is as follows:
– Rabies
– DHLPP
– Bordetella (a.k.a. “Kennel Cough”)*
– Canine Influenza*
Feline guests require the following mandatory vaccines:
– Rabies
– Distemper
PLEASE NOTE: All of the required vaccinations listed above must have been administered at least 72 hours prior to your pet’s admission to our lodging house. You may have your veterinarian fax a vaccination verification to us at (304) 428-3545 or you may bring a verified paper copy of the vaccination record on company letterhead when you check-in. If your pet has a legitimate medical reason prohibiting vaccination, we require a signed letter from your veterinarian on company letterhead.
* Most veterinarians do not routinely administer these vaccines unless specifically requested. Please check with your veterinarian.
What food is fed to the guests at Winding Road Kennel?
All of our guests are fed Purina Dog/Cat Chow brand food (a regular maintenance diet). The feeding schedule is twice per day. We are happy to make alternate arrangements according to your preferences and your pet’s dietary needs.
How many yard excursions are provided each day?
Each canine guest receives three 20-minute outdoor yard excursion times each day. If you would like to schedule additional yard excursion time for your pet, we can arrange that for an additional $3.75 per day fee, or $5.00 per day for two or more pets.
Are reservations required?
Advance reservations are required if you would like to guarantee your pet a space at our lodging house. Reservations may be reserved by calling our office during business hours.
Holiday and weekend reservations should be made as far in advance as possible – available spots sell out FAST! While we would love to accommodate everyone, our spaces are limited, unfortunately. However, a waiting list may be available.
We do accept last minute reservations (if space is available) with verified proof of vaccination.
Can you give my pet medication?
Yes, we can administer your pet’s prescription medication (provided by you at check-in) for an additional fee of $2.00 per dose. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept cats that require insulin at this time, but we can administer insulin to dogs.
What happens if my pet gets sick or injured?
If your pet suffers illness or injury while at our camp, we will attend to the situation promptly and take your pet to the veterinarian if necessary. We will make every effort to contact you, as well.
Are the boarding areas climate controlled?
All of our kennels are maintained at near constant temperatures year-round for your pet’s comfort. Heating (including heated floors) and air conditioning are utilized inside our lodging house as necessary to maintain climate control. Outside excursions are typically provided as three 20-minute sessions per day (outside time may be curtailed as necessary for our guests’ safety during extreme weather events). Water is constantly available to our guests, as well.
