Patience is a Necessity:
Some rescue dogs unfortunately, have never known a trustworthy human. Be patient and understanding. Training could take time, so expect accidents or occasional chewing of belongings, and be sure to put any “not safe for pet items” out of reach. Also, understand that most unwanted behavior is just a reaction of fear or insecurity, not an intentional misbehavior. If you have trouble with training, look up local trainers in your area for help.
Remember the 3-3-3 Rule:
A common rule of thumb is that it will take 3 days for your pet to decompress, 3 weeks to learn the new routine, and 3 months to finally feel at home. Once they settle in, you’ll be sure to have a best friend for life!
Health Care:
Research your local veterinary offices to find who is taking new clients, as well as who aligns best with the care you want for your pet. Be aware of the care your dog will need and be certain they get regular wellness checks. Also, be sure to get the medical records from the shelter to take to your vet when the time comes.
Socialization:
It is always good to start introducing your pet to its groomer and new people, places and pets early. It helps build confidence and reduce reaction behavior when in new situations. When started young, they learn quicker that groomers, and new people and situations aren’t scary or frightening things.
